A little more information would be helpful.
What system are you running? Are you sure that your drivers are appropriate for your hardware? Note that "appropriate for your hardware" does not mean whatever is newest, sometimes this can cause problems.
Does this happen with any other games? Have you verified your Steam cache? Etc.
