Posted this on the Steam forums too, but I wanted to post here as well in case anyone on these boards might have experienced this issue.
So, originally, my laptop ran this game on Windows 8.1, no issues. Then, someone dropped my computer and totaled the hard drive, so I got a new one with a recovery USB that just loaded stock Win8 onto it. I reinstalled my games, and again, Xenoverse was working just fine. This fresh install was done a few days ago, now.
Then, tonight, Windows Update spontaneously decides that today is a great day to update my system to Windows 8.1 again. Now, whenever I try to launch Xenoverse from my Steam library, or even from the .exe in the file directory itself, I get the launching dialogue, and my portrait turns green for a brief moment, then a few seconds later, Steam acts as if the game has "shut down;" it syncs with the server very briefly, sometimes I get the little post-game news / update window, and that's it. No error, no crash dialogue, no nothing.
I updated my Nvidia driver, I verified my contents, I deleted the game and reinstalled anyway, and I even did a fresh install of Steam when none of that worked. No dice.
Not sure what's going on here, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

I honestly have no clue whats happening to your computer. seems like the drop must have affected your system somehow

Nevermind, fixed. Turns out the Windows 8.1 update thought it would be hilarious to overwrite my Intel display drivers.
Which makes no sense, but it explains why frantically trying all of Nvidia's fifty million driver versions wasn't helping.
